The cultural diversity in the Bay Area makes it one of the best places to live in the world. Cambodian-Americans are certainly significant pieces of that cultural tapestry. The preservation of the Cambodian culture is, therefore, vital. It is paramount not only to the collective community, but also to the Cambodian community, and the individual Cambodians themselves.
The major leadership of local Cambodian-American community is made up of collaboration with the San Jose Cambodian Buddhist Society, the Santa Clara Cambodian Women Association, the Cambodian American Resource Agency, active community members, and the financial sponsors.

Social Dance, Fashion Show, & Cultural Dance

Dear Community,

In Collaborating with the San Jose Cambodian Buddhist Society, the Santa Clara Cambodian Women Association, the Cambodian American Resource Agency, and community members, the Cambodian New Year Festival Committee (CNYF-2008) has been hard at work in preparing and planning the Cambodian New Year event on April 12, 2008, located at Milpitas Community Center. Without the efforts of our volunteers and community members, our important celebration would not be possible. We would like to thank you.

Although we have made great progress, we still have a lot to do. Our committee only has about five more meetings to plan and prepare for our community event. During our last few meetings, it is imperative that we have your support and suggestions on details of our event. This celebration is salient to all of us so your thoughts opinions, and comments, are essential to the success of our event.

We look forward to seeing you at our 7th Meeting this Friday, January 25, 2008, commencing at 6:30pm-8: 30pm. We will meet at the Asian Pacific Family Resource Center (APFC) located on 625 Wool Creek Dr. Suite F, San Jose, Ca 95112 (Room #1)

UPDATE/PROGRESS:

Band/singer:

Miss Lor BophaThe talented Seak Meas Band will accompany our social dance. Unfortunately, as some of you many already know, one of the band's members, Pou Sambok, passed away not too long ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. This year, his band will play to celebrate his life and in memory of him. Miss Bopha Lor, the popular singer from Southern California, will be our main singer/entertainer for the social dance. Bopha won the Asian American Pageant a few years ago and has been entertaining/singing for numerous years. Along with Bopha, we will have other singers from the Bay Area (TBA).

Special Event:
This year we would also like to do a fashion show incorporating a more modern flare. We are in the process of getting donations and Sponsors from our community leaders and other retail stores. Currently we have three Khmer designers who have offered to create unique pieces for the show. This will be a high fashion, trendy fashion show, infused with Khmer elements. During the intervals of the fashion show, we will have performers and other creative acts. If you know any one interested in being a part of the fashion show (model, designer, make-up artist, etc) or would like to perform during the intervals, please contact us. We will schedule meetings and a photo-shoot soon. We need help in obtaining Khmer inspired clothing. If you know anyone that can be of help, please refer him or her to our committee.

Cultural Dance:
An intrinsic part of our culture is the traditional Cambodian dances. The Cambodian Cultural Dance Troupe, in collaboration with the Cultural Dance Group of Oakland are preparing cultural performances that aims to preserve our culture and to remind our youths of our rich heritage. Students meet for practice and dance lessons every Friday at Tully's Library. For more information, please visit

Happy New Year - Miss Kara Uy

Dear All,

Happy New Year! Hopefully everyone had a great Christmas and New Year holiday.

Now, let’s get back to our preparation and planning for the Cambodian New Year Festival 2008 (CNYF-08), "Year of the Rat 2552 B.E." We, the committee, would like to inform you that the CNYF-08’s facility has changed to a new location as indicated below, but the date will be still the same, Saturday, April 12, 2008.

Milpitas Community Center
457 E. Calaveras Blvd.,
Milpitas, CA 95035

Just like passed years, the committee started with a small number of people. And this year, I would like to let everyone know that we have a very outstanding member among us. That is Miss Kara Uy. Kara is a member of the SCCCWA, and she is very energetic. She works with passion in helping to drive the planning stage, and has been making very quick and effective decisions such as as finding and securing the new location and scouting for vocal talents.

This is only her first year in the committee, but she already is taking leadership positions as co-chair of the committee, involves in searching/evaluating facilities, retain live band and singer(s), and has also committed to manage the fashion show as part of evening entertainment program. If you want to be a model in the fashion show or know someone who wants to be a model, please contact her life.notesyahoo.com. If you want to share your view with her, please come to the CNYF’s meeting on January 25. I am proud to work with her as co-chair of the committee.

Best regards,
Chanthoeun To
